Visit Nawadankulama Tank in the morning.

Navadankulam Lake is situated between Chilaw and Puttalam, and is frequented by both local and migratory birds.

Waterfowl include Purple and Gray Heron, Purple Coot, Cotton Teal, Whistling Teal, and Cormorant. The main migratory species seen here are Pintail and Gargany.

Bird watching at Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary.

One of the six wetlands of international importance in Sri Lanka, Anawilundawa is situated between the two largest towns in the country, Chilaw and Puttalam. It has a total size of 1,397 hectares.

Numerous bird species have found it to be an ideal nesting and breeding location thanks to its distinctive natural configuration.
After bird watching at Anawilundawa, you’ll be transferred to Habarana.

Bird safari at Kaudulla National Park in the morning.

Kaudulla is one of the most visited destinations for bird watching. ‘Birdlife International’ has recognized it as an important bird area, where 160 species have been identified, including Spot-billed Pelican, Lesser Adjutant, Asian Spoonbill, Gray-Headed Fish Eagle, Black-headed Ibis, Painted and Open-billed Stork, Peacock and Giant Eagle.

Transfer to Kandy. Enroute visit Ranwali Spice Garden, Matale.

Highlights: Visit Kaudulla National Park, complementary foot massage at the spice garden.

Visit Udawatta Kale Sanctuary in the morning.

This sanctuary covers almost 104 hectares (257 acres). Udawattakele was declared as a forest reserve in 1856 by the British. It became a sanctuary in 1938.

It is home to 81 bird species, including Three-toed Kingfisher, Green-fronted Leaf Bird, Sri Lankan Hanging Parrot, Layard’s Parakeet, Hill Myna, and Spot-bellied Eagle Owl.

Some endemic species like the jackal, porcupine, deer and macaque can also be found here. It also has a great panoramic view of Kandy city.

Transfer to Nuwara Eliya.

In the morning, bird watching at Horton Plains.

This is the only place where 21 endemic bird species are found, including the Sri Lankan Whistling Thrush, Sri Lankan Magpie, Purple-blue Flycatcher, Sri Lankan White-eye, and Sri Lankan Wood Pigeon.

The Alpine Swift, Crested Serpent Eagle, Mountain Hawk Eagle, and Black-Tailed Godwit are just a few examples of migratory birds.

Transfer to Tissamaharama.

Visit Bundala National Park in the morning.

Bundala is an internationally important wintering ground for Sri Lanka’s migratory waterfowl. It is home to 197 species of birds, most notably the Greater Flamingo, which migrates in large flocks.

In 1991, Bundala became the first wetland in Sri Lanka to be declared a RAMSA site. The park is also acknowledged in Sri Lanka as an Important Bird Area.

You will see a remarkable variety of wildlife, including Smaller Whistling Ducks, Indian Cormorants, and Black-necked Cranes, as well as Grey Herons, Painted Cranes, and Black-headed Ibis at Bundala.

Transfer to Deniyaya.

Bird watching at Sinharaja Rain Forest.

Sinharaja is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has the world’s largest mixed-species bird population. Bird watching at Sinharaja is a must-do activity because more than 95% of Sri Lanka’s indigenous birds can be seen here.

More than 147 species have so far been identified. The Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Red-faced Magpie, Gray Hornbill, and White-headed Starling are a few examples of common birds.

Transfer to Colombo.

Tour Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital city.

Colombo is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city. The name derives from the Sinhala ‘kolon-thota, port on the river Kelani’ or ‘kola-amba-thota, harbour with leafy/green mango trees’.

Thanks to its natural harbour, it has been a trading point for thousands of years, visited by traders from as far as China and the Roman Empire. From the 8th century, Arab traders settled in the area and eventually came to control the trade through Colombo.
