Habarana Lodge resort, a tranquil nature-loving oasis in Sri Lanka

Haberana Lodge was created by two young architects who were trained by Geoffrey Bawa, the legendary Sri Lankan ‘Father of Tropical Modernism’.

The result is an open, spread out rustic eco-style resort featuring individual rooms resembling small houses in a remote village.

Recreational facilities, including elephant rides, boating and tennis, are located close by, facing Habarana Lake.

The end result blends beautifully with nature while seamlessly delivering world-class hospitality.

Even on hot days, the design ensures the resort is blessed with the free circulation of a refreshing breeze.

Judging only from its simple branding, first-time guests arriving at the Lodge might not have high expectations of standards.

But they are amazed by the welcome they received, the service they experience, and the quality of public areas, gardens, bedrooms and food.

They marvel at the pillars and decorative balconies above the reception area, and love the fact that many of the employees are from the local farming communities.

These and other locals are eager to provide ‘authentic Sri Lankan hospitality’ while showcasing their best practices at homes and in the paddy fields.

The resort is also steeped in nature. The total number of bird species recorded in the island is nearly 500, with more than 120 found at Habarana.

Meanwhile, there are other smaller hotels in the North Central Province that have joined forces with Habarana Lodge to ensure best practices, including monthly staff-training sessions.
